Last week, the US Food and Drug Administration upgraded the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine from emergency authorization use to “approved” opening the legal doors for vaccination requirements.
Many businesses, government agencies, and universities have already started to form their plans for mandated vaccinations. The Pentagon has already made it a requirement for government workers and private companies such as Delta Airlines have announced fees for unvaccinated passengers. However, there are some exceptions for people with religious objections or disabilities that conflict with the use of the shot.
“I thought it should be the people’s choice, what they want to do with their bodies, so yeah, but also if a business decides to mandate it that’s their right. I just don’t think it’s safe and now they are kind of paying people to take the vaccine…” said John Green, a student at Klein Cain.
The Pfizer vaccine is now fully approved and its status updated, meaning that the age at which you can take the shot is lowered, dropping from 16 down to 12.
“the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, and will now be marketed as Comirnaty1, for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine also continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA), including for individuals 12 through 15 years of age,” per the FDA’s official website.
With the vaccine and Covid-19 as a whole sparking many debates over the right course of action across the country, this announcement sparked a plethora of opinions.
“When it comes to the vaccine I believe that everyone who can take it should take it. And I mean if the FDA approved it, jab me up! I feel like requirements of certain places is going to further divide our country, and that a lot of people will complain the whole way through of getting rid of Covid and won’t appreciate it until later on when it finally ends,” said Jane Smithers.
As the Covid pandemic escalates into a third wave, there is concern about the likely hood of new variants forming in addition to the already 2X more contagious Delta variant, according to the CDC. With the politicizing of healthcare decisions, Americans are finding themselves on two distinct sides of a pandemic that has already claimed 640,000 American lives.
1 Comirnaty is an agglomeration of the words “Covid Immunity” and “mRNA” which is what Pfizer Refers to their vaccines for ages 12 years and older.
